IndigiNews

IndigiNews is grateful for our sponsors. Become one.

Earlier this week, the IndigiNews team got together in person for our annual retreat. This gathering is so important as we look back at the year behind us and vision for the future ahead — and spend time together face to face, since we all work remotely and rarely see one another outside of our screens.

During the three days of meetings we had in downtown Vancouver, I was struck by how much we’ve accomplished in 2024. People have often told us that we punch above our weight — which I think is definitely true when I look at our small team of five full-time editorial staff and the huge stories we manage to take on almost every week. I’m constantly in awe of our team members for the tenacity, respect and integrity that they show.

One of very few photos we remembered to capture of the IndigiNews team who attended the retreat, just missing Spencer Sacht-Lund!

Our team happened to all be together in Vancouver at the same time as Vancouver Fashion Week was wrapping up — and a few of us were able to attend a showcase by the Snuneymuxw fashion house Ay Lelum in memory of their late relative Joel Good.

You may have seen the story that myself and Julie Chadwick wrote about Joel, and the Ay Lelum collection in his memory, last month. It was clear from seeing this collection in person — and the large group of Joel’s family members who attended — that the powerful legacy he left will continue to resonate.

The Good family at the end of the showing of Ay Lelum’s collection ‘Your Spirit’ at VFW, which received a standing ovation.

Another reason why we decided to gather this week was so that our team could attend the annual Webster Awards, one of the top honours for journalism in British Columbia. At the event, IndigiNews publisher Eden Fineday took home the Commentator of the Year/City Mic Award, recognizing her influence and perspective as a columnist.

It was beyond amazing to see her be honoured for her strong voice in this space — Eden is one of those people you can’t help but listen to and follow because she has such a powerful perspective and compelling way of delivering it. IndigiNews was also nominated in the Excellence in Arts & Culture Reporting for our collaboration with the Narwhal on the return of a Nisga’a totem pole from Scotland after almost 100 years.

One of the best parts of the Webster Awards is having the opportunity to gather with industry colleagues and to see many friends, former coworkers, and other respected people in the industry. I sometimes still have to pinch myself when I see an outlet like IndigiNews get recognition in these types of spaces which — when I started my career about a decade ago — were basically completely exclusive to legacy media. It’s amazing to see the tide shifting.

As always, thanks for reading and supporting IndigiNews.
