ᑖᓂᓯ ᓂᐚᐦᑰᒫᑲᓇᐠ ᐁᑿ ᓂᑑᑌᒼᑎᐠ᙮ tânisi niwâhkômâkanak êkwa nitôtêmtik,
Hello my friends and relatives,
I am thrilled to introduce you to Crystal Greene, a dedicated journalist and storyteller, who has been selected for the joint investigative journalism fellowship offered by Ricochet Media, IndigiNews and Pivot! Among the 54 applicants to this fellowship, which is supported by Journalists for Human Rights and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, there were many impressive and accomplished journalists. But Crystal’s resume, story ideas, and interview really impressed us.
One of the things that first stood out to me when I read Crystal’s application was that she has gone all-in on journalism. In 2023, she graduated with honours with a Bachelor of Journalism at University of King's College in Halifax. Before that, in 2022, she completed the Indigenous Journalism and Communication certificate program at First Nations University of Canada in Regina. Back in 2011, Crystal graduated from a joint program at the University of Winnipeg and Red River College Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, and a Creative Communications Diploma as a media production major.
As if all of this wasn’t impressive enough, she also is an Alumni of the New Voices and Aboriginal Documentary programs at the National Screen Institute!

In her application, Crystal speaks of her love for the vibrant Indigenous community in Winnipeg, where she was born and raised. Of Kijipuktuk / Halifax, she says, “Mi'kmak'i has been nice to me. Seeing the iconic white pines and Canadian shield remind me of home, but it's quite different
here, and there is a sense of displacement of being Indigenous from ‘out west.’ As an Anishinaabe - Cree woman there is an urge to move home and help my people tell their stories, on-the-ground, in Winnipeg and beyond, from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, across the prairies, and around the many lakes in Anishinaabe Aki.”
Crystal’s passion for reporting has already led her to work with The Signal HFX, CBC, Mi'kmaq-Maliseet Nations News, and the Winnipeg Free Press. She tells us that she was inspired by journalists she met on the frontlines of pipeline fights in North Dakota and Wet'suwet'en territory, during the pandemic. As she embarks on this fellowship, we are excited to see the impactful stories she will continue to bring to light, amplifying voices that are often overlooked.

As the selected fellow, Crystal will spend three months at each of the three outlets, starting with Ricochet Media, followed by IndigiNews and Pivot, for a total of 9 months. We will be cross posting many of the stories though, so you should be enjoying the fruits of this fellowship soon.
She says, “I look forward to learning from more experienced journalists and helping to make a difference by holding power to account – and making sure that underrepresented voices are heard.”
Join us in celebrating Crystal Greene’s remarkable achievement and stay tuned for her groundbreaking work. Congratulations, Crystal — we are incredibly proud to have you as part of the IndigiNews family!
hiy hiy!
