tânisi niwâhkômâkanak êkwa nitôtêmtik,
Hello my friends and relatives,
As we turn the corner into another year, I raise my hands to you for being a part of the IndigiNews community. I’m so proud of everything our small team has accomplished this year, including winning our first National Newspaper Award, winning ten Indigenous Journalists Association awards, and continuing to tell trauma-informed stories in a good way while supporting the wellness of our team. However, due to rising costs and Meta’s journalism ban, decolonizing the media has its challenges.
I wanted to let you in on how much it costs IndigiNews to do the journalism we do.
In addition to paying our talented reporters, we also cover essential overhead costs. These include salaries for our editors, social media uncle, and myself. We also invest in hosting our website, maintaining crucial software subscriptions, attending conferences, and funding travel for investigative journalism and editorial reporting.
Plus, since Meta blocked “Canadian” journalism in 2023, we have to pay to get our stories visible on their platforms. That’s right — Facebook won’t allow us to post our stories unless we pay to advertise every single one of them. In the past year, we’ve spent over $16,000 on digital ads alone.
When all the overhead is factored into our journalism, the cost to produce each story is $4,275.
And you know what? I believe our journalism is worth it.
Taking the time to tell stories properly is always worth the expense, time and effort. Some media outlets don’t take enough time to properly develop relationships with Indigenous communities before jumping into stories about them, but we’ve always put our relationships – with ourselves, each other and the communities we report on – first.
We are here as the antidote to the trauma narrative that pervades much of mainstream reporting about Indigenous Peoples.
This month, we’re raising $20,000 to ensure IndigiNews continues to contribute to the future of our Indigenous storytelling. These funds will help us cover costs and plan for the next year of incredible, award-winning journalism all across Indigenous homelands.
Will you help us continue our storytelling journey?
