Support Indigenous storytelling

Over the last year, nipiy (water) has become a big part of our storytelling journey. Nipiy is sacred, and our bodies are made of it. Indigenous People have been stewarding waterways since time immemorial — and they continue to do so to this day, despite resistance from colonial and corporate powers.

Clean drinking water and access to food is one of our basic needs, but for many Indigenous communities it is not affordable or easily accessible. For decades, our waterways have been contaminated — with pollutants, with oil spills — thanks to corporate greed and a disregard for Indigenous lives.

And yet, Indigenous communities resist. Leaders across our homelands are trying to restore the lands to what they were before, with the respect they deserve.

That’s why it’s so important for us to tell these stories.

Help us tell stories of Indigenous water protectors

When the Alberta Energy Regulator took years to notify the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation of the tailings leak from an Imperial Oil site, we partnered with Ricochet Media to send Brandi Morin to the ACFN to amplify the voices of leaders calling for accountability.

When the Esk’etemc First Nation finally received a $147M settlement after a decades-long battle for broken water promises, we sent reporter Dionne Phillips to capture this milestone.

When the Ktunaxa, Secwépemc and syilx Okanagan Nations finally got a seat at the table in negotiating the Columbia River Treaty, we sent Aaron Hemens to document the impact of having Indigenous voices at the table.

We tell these stories not only to advocate for the protection of our sacred waters, but to ensure that the defenders who are at the forefront of resistance movements are not forgotten.

Will you pledge a monthly or yearly contribution so we can continue to do this work?

Yes, I’ll support you!

hiy hiy,
