tânisi niwâhkômâkanak êkwa nitôtêmtik,

Hello my friends and relatives,

This week, Cara McKenna and I had the pleasure of meeting with some brilliant and inspiring early-career journalists.

Why?

IndigiNews has partnered with Journalists for Human Rights, Ricochet Media and Pivot, along with the support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, to launch an investigative journalism fellowship for early career BIPOC reporters.

The response we received to the call - 56 applications - is a testament to the immense talent and passion within our communities.

IndigiNews has partnered with Journalists For Human Rights, Ricochet Media and Pivot on a year-long BIPOC fellowship.

I've been absolutely astounded by the caliber of the shortlisted candidates. Their interviews were inspiring, showcasing the sophistication and talent of up-and-coming journalists.

The selected fellow will spend three months at each outlet, starting with Ricochet Media, followed by IndigiNews and Pivot, for a total of 9 months. We will be cross posting many of the stories though, so we should be enjoying the fruits of this fellowship soon.

What an incredible opportunity for an early career BIPOC journalists! In this difficult time of layoffs and shuttering of news outlets, it's uplifting for us to be able to create such a position.

Support Indigenous Storytelling

This fellowship will allow us to publish more deep dive, investigative journalism. That's our favourite kind of reporting – the kind that has the power to really affect change on important issues in society.

And we'll be doing it by elevating voices and perspectives that have so often been overlooked, as we always do at IndigiNews.

I can't wait to introduce you to the selected fellow and to read the impactful stories they will bring to light through this partnership.

hiy hiy!
